How is the PRI supporting an ambitious UN Global Plastics Treaty?
The agreement of a UN Global Plastics Treaty will be significant internationally, including for moving beyond voluntary private sector action. It provides an opportunity to establish a similar policy mandate to the Paris Agreement and Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework with regards to eliminating plastic pollution and supporting financial sector action on climate and biodiversity goals.
PRI priorities on plastics:
- Advocate for an enabling policy environment to facilitate investor action to end plastic pollution (supported by the Finance Sector Statement).
- Support accelerated investor action, including by supporting relevant investor collaboration and sharing best practices on circular economy for plastics.
- Enhance the knowledge of investors’ role in addressing plastic pollution within the APAC responsible investment ecosystem.

The Financial Sector Statement is addressed to member states negotiating the international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution (also called “UN Global Plastics Treaty”) and sets out what a robust agreement would include from the perspective of the financial sector. As of November 2024, it is endorsed by 180 financial institutions representing over (US) $17.2 trillion in combined assets.
The statement remains open to receiving support from additional financial institutions.
