Former President Jimmy Carter’s life, legacy honored
Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican leaders delivered eulogies as mourners said their final goodbyes to the former President Jimmy Carter.
Today, Jan. 9, is a day of mourning across the United States for former President Jimmy Carter.
Carter died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100, the only former president to make it to the century mark.
Flags continue to be flown at half-staff in honor of Carter.

President Joe Biden appointed Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning throughout the U.S.
“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr.
“I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.”
National funeral service for Jimmy Carter scheduled for Jan. 9
After his Dec. 29 death, Carter was lying in repose at the Carter Presidential Center in Georgia.
His remains were transported to Washington, D.C., Tuesday, Jan. 7, where they were lying in state at the United States Capitol rotunda. The public was invited to pay respects until 7 a.m. Jan. 9.
On Thursday, Jan. 9, there will be a national funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.
All five living presidents and former presidents are expected at the funeral, including President-elect Donald Trump.
Biden promised Carter he would deliver the eulogy.
Carter’s remains then will be transported to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where a private funeral service will be held for the former president.
US stock markets to be closed for day of mourning
U.S. stock markets will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9.
The NYSE and Nasdaq traditionally close during the funerals of former presidents.
Bond markets will be open, but for reduced hours, closing early at 2 p.m. ET, according to a recommendation from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
Will there be mail delivery on day of mourning for Carter?
There will be no mail delivery Jan. 9, according to an email from Tiffany Rowland, Strategic communications specialist with the U.S. Postal Service.
“Out of respect for the 39th President of the United States and to honor his vast contributions to our country during his lifetime, and consistent with the Presidential Proclamation, the United States Postal Service will suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity on Jan 9,” Rowland said.

In a proclamation issued Dec. 29, Biden ordered flags across the U.S. to be flown at half-staff “in honor and tribute to the memory of President James Earl Carter, Jr. and as an expression of public sorrow.”

Carter’s legacy as 39th president of US
Carter served as America’s 39th president from 1977 to 1981, at a time soaring inflation and gasoline shortages.
Career highlights include:
- Negotiated the landmark Camp David peace accords between Israel and Egypt.
- Transferred the Panama Canal to Panamanian ownership.
- Expanded public lands in Alaska.
- Established formal diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.
- Created the modern Department of Education and the Department of Energy.
- Failed to secure the release of Americans held hostage by Iran, including a failed rescue attempt.
- Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, 22 years after he left the White House.
“He’s never going to be ranked as a great president; he’s middling as a president,” said historian Douglas Brinkley, author of a 1998 book on Carter, “The Unfinished Presidency.”
“But as an American figure, he’s a giant.”
“I can’t deny that I was a better ex-president than I was a president,” Carter said in 2005.
After leaving the presidency, Carter and his wife:
- Established the Carter Center in Atlanta as they worked on global health and democracy
- Helped negotiate an end to the long civil war in Nicaragua between the Contra rebels and the Sandinistas.
- Met with North Korean leaders to try to end its nuclear weapons program.
- Mediated conflicts in Ethiopia, Liberia, Haiti, Bosnia, Sudan, Uganda and Venezuela.
- Led dozens of delegations of international observers to various countries to help ensure elections were free and fair.
The couple were especially recognized for their volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity.
He also wrote more than 30 books, including a collection of poems and paintings, and the lessons and demands of his Christian faith.
