NYSE honors Carter with moment of silence
Joe Biden honors ‘friend,’ former President Jimmy Carter
Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States has died at 100. President Joe Biden delivered remarks on his legacy.
Former President Jimmy Carter, honored and celebrated for his humanitarian work around the world more than his time in office, died Sunday at the age of 100 in the house he and his wife of 77 years, Rosalyn, built together more than 60 years ago in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
“President Carter was a man of character, courage, and compassion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history,” President Joe Biden said in a statement Sunday. “He embodied the very best of America: A humble servant of God and the people.”

“While I strongly disagreed with him philosophically and politically,” President-elect Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, “I also realized that he truly loved and respected our Country, and all it stands for. He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed.”
Will this affect the markets Monday?
Will stock markets be closed in honor of former President Jimmy Carter?
While the New York Stock Exchange said that it honored “the service and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter” in an X post Sunday evening, the NYSE will be open normal business hours for trading on Monday.
However, U.S. stock markets will likely be closed on Thursday, Jan. 9, which Biden declared would be a national day of mourning.
At opening Monday, the New York Stock Exchange honored the 39th president with a moment of silence.
The NYSE and Nasdaq traditionally close during the funerals of former presidents. When former President George H. W. Bush died on Nov. 30, 2018, U.S. markets closed on Dec. 5. The U.S. bond market also closed, and the CME Group shuttered its U.S.-based equity and interest rate futures and options products.
Markets also closed on Jan. 2, 2007, the day of former President Gerald R. Ford’s funeral, days after his death, in June 2004 for Ronald Reagan and in April 1994 for Richard Nixon.
